Diss Street, Tower Hamlets
Use: Mixed Use (4 No. Live/Work, 6 No. Flats + Multifaith Space)
The mixed use development on Hackney Road, London, had a challenging brief. Four live/work housing units and six two-bedroom flats were sought in addition to a multi-faith spiritual space and associated community facilities. The spiritual spaces were placed underground to create a thought-provoking, ephemeral spatial experience for all faiths with light wells and rooflights providing dramatic shafts of light from above. This allowed the above ground space for the residential units and community facilities, taking advantage of natural lighting and ventilation. The work/live units were located to the rear of the site, benefitted from the use of the private road. The roof top spaces were utilised as a topographic shared space created for all residents.
The proposal dealt with the density of the site without compromising on the residential dwellings light, views and ventilation. The exterior facade was clad in a timber panelling whilst the facade to the interior courtyard was a simple white render.
